The North Star is a private sober living home dedicated to providing women of all ages and backgrounds a safe place to live during early recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
We are a God centered and 12-step centered household with an emphasis on service to each other as well as our community. The North Star was founded in April of 2009 and is owned by and run by RECOVERED women who are active in the 12-steps of recovery and the 12-step fellowship in Kerrville. We will not tell you how to get sober from drug and alcohol addiction…we will SHOW you how we have recovered.
The North Star provides safe and comfortable housing for 15 women while offering a convenient location to shopping and downtown Kerrville. The North Star has been newly renovated and the family environment helps women to develop lifelong friendships.
Laura Godwin grew up in Dallas, TX and was working as a surgical tech until her drug and alcohol addiction consumed her life. After multiple arrests, her family intervened and sent her to a treatment facility in the Texas Hill Country in March of 2012. At the suggestion of her counselor, she made the decision to stay in Kerrville after completing treatment and arrived at The North Star Sober Living for Women in April. While living at The North Star, she got a sponsor worked the steps, and began rebuilding her life. During her stay she became the House Manager and thus began helping other women rebuild their lives. After 18 months at The North Star, Laura moved to San Antonio to work at a homeless shelter that provides 90 day treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. While in San Antonio, Laura gave birth to her son and decided Kerrville was where she wanted to raise her family and moved back in 2015. Laura and Grace had grown close over the years and it was a perfect fit for the two to become partners in running The North Star. Laura now oversees the day to day operations of the house and is committed to continuing the legacy of high accountability recovery which has been the cornerstone of The North Star.
Residents are responsible for their own food, toiletries, and laundry detergent. We ask residents to bring their own twin bedding, pillows, and towels…but we do have extras just in case. The North Star provides toilet paper, all cleaning products, trash bags, paper towels, light bulbs, etc. The kitchen is fully furnished with all amenities.
The North Star has an atmosphere with high accountability and integrity, stressing the importance of 12-step recovery, fellowship, and service.
At the North Star we provide a safe, comfortable family environment where women develop lifelong friendships and skills for health independent living.
The North Star is the longest running womens sober home in Kerrville. We offer a safe and effective place for women to recover from addiction.
In 2009, prompted by several women’s sober home closures, Grace started her own home to make sure women still had the opportunity to benefit from Kerrville’s unique recovery community. On April 17th, 2009 Grace welcomed her first resident at The North Star Sober Living for Women. There, she cultivated an atmosphere with high accountability and integrity, stressing the importance of 12-step recovery, fellowship, and service. In March of 2012 she moved The North Star to its current location where she now can provide safe and comfortable housing for 15 women. In 2017, her former house manager, Laura Godwin, partnered with Grace to ensure the future of The North Star. Under the direction of Grace and Laura, the North Star has become well known for having high accountability and helping countless women start new lives.
